Jetpack 4.5: Monetize your site, brand new VideoPress, and many new shortcodes and widgets

Welcome to Jetpack 4.5, available now for upgrade or installation. We’re starting the year in style with some very exciting additions and improvements that we can’t wait for you to try. This release includes:

  • WordAds
  • Brand new VideoPress
  • New shortcode support
  • More sidebar widgets
  • An update to our Terms of Service

WordAds

WordAds is a new, one-click simple feature designed to help you generate income from your WordPress site. Jetpack allows integration of WordAds — a unique ad program from WordPress.com designed exclusively for WordPress sites. Not only do we provide high quality ads, but after working with tens of thousands of users we have determined the best placements to guarantee both the highest revenue and most reliable compatibility across most WordPress themes.

Jetpack Ads Earnings

WordAds is instantly available to all users who have purchased the Jetpack Premium plan — no approval process required. Once you’ve purchased the plan, activate the feature in the Engagement tab within Jetpack. You’ll start seeing ads on your site right away, and can tweak ad placement settings and view your earnings on WordPress.com.

Brand new VideoPress

VideoPress is an ad-free, high-quality (HD) video hosting and streaming service designed for WordPress. We think it’s the easiest way to upload and share videos to the web while retaining full brand control on your site (i.e., no ads!).

Over the past few months, we’ve rebuilt the VideoPress integration with Jetpack from the ground up. When you start using it, you’ll notice:

  • No more complicated signup process — it just works.
  • Full integration with your media library — if you know how to insert an image, you now know how to insert videos with VideoPress.
  • The ability to upload videos from the Media Library or directly from the Post Editor.

You can view and edit video meta data from the edit media page in the Media Library, and insert uploaded videos into any post or page.

VideoPress is available to all users on the Jetpack Premium plan (limited to 13Gb) and those on the Jetpack Professional plan (unlimited).

New shortcode support

All users have access to fourteen new shortcodes that have been available on WordPress.com for a while. These new shortcodes enable you to embed content from services like Twitter and Spotify directly into a post or page.

More sidebar widgets

We’ve added quite a few new widgets for your WordPress site sidebars and footers:

  • Authors: display your authors on the front end of your site. Note: this widget doesn’t come with much styling, so it is up to the theme/user to style as desired.
  • Blog Stats: a simple stat counter to display page views on the front end of your site.
  • Milestone: adds a countdown to an upcoming event or milestone that you designate.

Update to our Terms of Service

We’ve updated our Terms of Service to include a Jetpack-specific section that describes Jetpack, clarifies how features within Jetpack work, and links to a support document that outlines what information and content is synced to our servers when you use Jetpack. Please give it a read and let us know if you have any questions.

As always, you can take a look at the revision history to see exactly what has changed.

These changes will take effect on March 1, 2017. By using Jetpack after this date, you agree to our updated Terms of Service.

I was hoping this release might include support for 360-degree photos as was recently added to WordPress.com. Any ETA on when that might be incorporated?

Are there any plans to enable selfhosted WordPress sites with jetpack premium subscription to be visible in the wordpress.com reader?

    • Jeremy says:

We’re definitely considering adding Jetpack sites to WordPress.com Tag Pages! However, before to make that change we need to have all systems in place to avoid abuse and to make sure no inappropriate content can be added to the Reader Tag pages.

Keep an eye on this blog; whenever Jetpack sites start appearing on Tag pages we’ll let you know!

I can’t wait for that. 😉 I’m on worpdress.com at the moment but I love the idea of more flexibility while still appearing to the wider wordpress family in the tag pages. 😀

Are JetPack Ads (WordAds) still only available on WordPress.com or can it now be used on self-hosted WordPress.org sites as well?

    Liked by 1 person

    • Richard Muscat says:

Hi Jenn, yes they are now available for self-hosted WordPress.org site as well. This version of Jetpack (4.5) makes it possible to do exactly that, however please note that a Premium subscription is required.

So we’d have to pay a minimum of $99/yr to even run an ad thru WordAds? What are the chances of earning that back?

we’d have to pay a minimum of $99/yr to even run an ad thru WordAds?

That’s correct. Our new Ads feature is available to Premium and Professional plan customers only.

Once you purchase one of the plans you will get access to multiple Premium features, like Site Backups, Security Scans and automated threat resolutions, video hosting, and more. Jetpack Ads is another of those Premium features: you’ll get access to an ad network that’s curated for quality, optimized for geographic location and locale, with ad placements that are guaranteed to work with almost any theme. Find out more about the other advantages of Jetpack Ads here.

You can also learn more about the different Jetpack Plans here.

If you’d rather build your own ad network, rotate ads, and manage ad placements yourself, you can do it for free with a plugin like this one.

What are the chances of earning that back?

That will depend on factors like the number of daily visitors on your site, and their location. You can learn more about how earnings are calculated here.

I would also recommend that you consider the other features I mentioned above in your calculation. As an example, if your site is hacked or if one of your plugins includes a security vulnerability, our security features will protect your site and help you solve any issue very quickly, thus saving you a lot of time, and money!

VideoPress-question: is it possible to disable the conversion/encoding process when you post a video? I’d like to handle the conversion myself, before uploading, to control the quality of the video.

    Like

    • Jeremy says:

That won’t be possible. The conversion happens on our servers after the upload is complete, so that’s not something you can easily control or change.

If, however, you’re not satisfied with the quality of our conversion process, send us an email with some examples. We’ll be happy to look into it and see what we can do to improve things.

I was about to buy the Jetpack Premium plan for Jetpack Ads, but I realized that you only pay publishers via Paypal. Paypal allows users in my country to buy online, but it doesn’t allow them to receive money. If you could offer alternative payment methods such as Payoneer and Electronic Bank Transfer, then you would get a lot of sign ups. For now, I am sticking with progressive adnetworks such as Adsense and Yahoo Bing Ads.

    • Jeremy says:

Paypal is indeed the only option right now, but we’ll publish a blog post here if we ever add more payment options.

      Thanks for the feedback!

Once you purchase the plan, you can activate the Ads module and start displaying ads on your site right away. There is no approval process. That is true regardless of your site’s language.

WordPress.com Premium Plans are only available for WordPress.com sites, hosted on WordPress.com. If you’ve just created a new site, hosted somewhere else, you won’t be able to use that WordPress.com plan there.

        2. If i already have blog in wordpress but i hosted it in the self-hosted company such as bluehost, rapidgator, etc,. Can i join this Jetpack premium Plan. If yes, then how to buy and activate this plan from self hosted company?,

If you have a self-hosted WordPress site and wish to use a Jetpack Premium Plan on that site, you’ll need to install and activate Jetpack first. You can do so by clicking on this link. Once Jetpack is configured, you’ll have the option to use the free version of Jetpack, or to purchase one of our plans.

If you already use the Jetpack plugin on your self-hosted site, you can go to Jetpack > Dashboard > Plans in your dashboard, and you’ll be able to purchase a Jetpack Plan from there.

        I hope this helps!

Hello Jeremy, I’m using WordAds on my site, but with the AdControl Plugin and the ads are showing, but the earning is 0. My site gets 20k daily visits and I want to know if the stats are updated only monthly.

Also, is https://wordpress.com/ads/earnings the only panel to check ads stats?

    Like

    • Jeremy says:

Yes, you can view your earnings on WordPress.com only. It’s worth noting that earnings are calculated monthly. If you just recently switched ads on, it may take up to a month before you start to see earnings in your account.
