Increase Your Site’s Revenue with Ads

Are you looking for a simple way to make extra money from your WordPress website? If so, many bloggers and business owners use advertising to bring in income, and you may want to consider doing the same.

Ads provide a straightforward process for diversifying your income, without taking time and effort away from your day-to-day site management. And with a paid plan, you can show ads from major advertising networks on your site without having to put on your suit to pitch an advertising firm.

Let’s take a look at the benefits of adding ads to your WordPress site, learn about the ad program, how to activate it, and how to customize the advertisements on your site to make the maximum amount of money possible.

Earn revenue with less effort

Most business owners want to make money with their site, even if it’s not their primary goal. After all, it would be great to earn enough money to purchase a better camera for your photography blog, or a new laptop or faster phone for on-the-go site management.

This is why incorporating banner ads into your revenue mix is a smart move for WordPress site owners. These ads help you start earning money with your site, but without spending time selling products or incorporating affiliate links into all of your content.

You can begin earning money right away with ads, whether your WordPress website is a blog that you run for fun or a business website. It’s an easy process to set up, and there’s no ongoing commitment required.

Ads can also help you earn more revenue in the long run. Forgot about the “How to Bleed a Radiator” tutorial that you published on your home improvement blog five years ago? Well, it’s still attracting readers, so you might as well place a banner ad below it.

How to activate and use Ads on your site

One of the major benefits of using Ads is that Jetpack makes the process of placing ads on your site easy. There’s no special code required — you just need to have a paid plan. Any money you make from your ads is deposited into your PayPal account on a monthly basis.

To activate the ads feature on your site, head to Settings → Traffic, then toggle on the Enable ads and display an ad below each post option.

Activate the Ads feature here to begin displaying advertising on your posts.

Once this option is activated, ads will begin appearing below the posts on your site.

Exactly how much you will earn with your ads varies depending on a variety of factors, including your site’s traffic. A greater number of site visitors increases the likelihood that someone will view or click on your banner ads.

To track your earnings, go to your WordPress ad settings, or click the View your earnings link on this screen. Your ad dashboard will show you how your earnings are stacking up.

Customize the locations of your site ads

The team behind the ads at Jetpack works with thousands of publishers (that’s you!) and thousands of advertisers. Over time, they discovered the best places to put ads on your site, and how to best display them to ensure that you and your advertisers make as much money as possible.

However, there’s definitely customization available for this process. If you want to display more ads, there’s a one-click option for adding them to your header and a “drag and drop” option for adding them to your sidebar or footer.

To place ads in the header of your site, or to add a second one near the bottom of your posts, scroll down to Additional Ad Placements, then toggle on the options you want to try.

Ads can be added at the top of each page, too.

If you want to place ads along the sidebar or footer of your website, go to Appearance → Widgets and then drag and drop the Ads (Jetpack) widget into the sidebar or footer. You can choose whether they will live above or below the other widgets.

You can add ads in any widgetized area with this option.

Further customization is available by altering your theme’s functions.php file. The full tutorial on how to do this is available under the “Can I customize my ad placement?” subheading on this support page. Whatever you do, though, don’t forget to create a child theme before implementing any changes to your theme — that way they’re not lost with any subsequent updates.

You can add ads to your site using different ad plugins, even when you’re not using Jetpack. However, to use Jetpack’s own Ads feature you will need to upgrade to a Premium or Professional plan.

Until you remedy the problems detailed in the following articles, such as paying out $111 for 200,000 hits and not offering ad placement control within a given article or post, I will not upgrade to the Premium plan (to get access to WordAds), despite my high regard and absolute respect for JetPack and what you guys are doing in the WordPress universe. Honestly, there’s no point paying premium when your ads bring in mere pennies, not dollars:

Earnings can indeed vary a lot depending on your site and the type of traffic your site gets. A good number of hits does matter, but it’s not the only factor: the location of your visitors and the type of content on your site have a big impact on the advertisers that will bid to display ads on your site.

As per ad placement control, you’re in full control of where the ads appear on your site. You can find out all your options here:

I hope this clarifies things a bit!

You’ve clarified ad placement, but not the WordAds issue. I’d appreciate links to sites that are earning in excess of US$1000 per month with WordAds. Put your words and explanations where the money is. In the buzzeemo article, the following dampened my enthusiasm for WordAds completely:

“..two US Dollars for 22K+ ad impressions! This is ridiculous to say the least. Note that half of this traffic was from North America and Europe.”

        You said:

“the location of your visitors and the type of content on your site have a big impact on the advertisers that will bid to display ads on your site”

So, for the benefit of all those reading this post who are interested in bringing serious income with WordAds, please answer the following questions, the more specific you are, the better we’ll understand the action we need to take to make this ad network work for us, not against us:

        1. Which locations work best for WordAds – where ought we concentrate our targeting? Be specific!

        2. What types of content work best for bringing in top WordAds advertisers? Be specific, we need to know!

I am so close to saying “the hell with it” and just going for WordAds anyway as I’m sick and tired of checking out the other ad networks that are out there – they verge upon the criminal in respect to how they trick and mislead the audience with their cunning below the belt CTA strategies (“Play” “Download” buttons that have no explanations as to what you are playing or downloading, “Pop-ups” “Pop-unders” windows that scream I’m Being Used, ads that say one thing but lead you to content that has nothing to do with what you clicked on…I’ll stop here, you get my drift).

Thanks for your insights and, hopefully, answers with links to sites that earn well thanks to WordAds.

        Your turn…

I’m afraid there is no definite answer to those questions. Advertisers constantly change strategies based on the things they advertise. They also have to manage their budget, and consequently won’t do the same thing month after month forever. There is no silver bullet or one-size-fits-all strategy when working with ads; if there was one, everyone would follow that same strategy and it would become useless after a few days.

I’d appreciate links to sites that are earning in excess of US$1000 per month with WordAds.

That is not something we will divulge, to respect our users’ privacy.

Also, what is the minimum traffic requirement to be eligible for WordAds? I’m concerned as my site is still in pilot mode. I’ve had 1202 hits since Nov 2017. Is this enough? I will not upgrade until I know in advance that I am suitable for WordAds – I don’t need anything else in the upgrade plan other than WordAds.

If you purchase a Jetpack plan your site will immediately be approved for WordAds. That said, I would not expect to make much money from a site with that many views in 4 months. This will be true regardless of the advertising solution you choose.
