Make your writing easier with the Daily Writing Prompt! Get a prompt each day to inspire your next post.

The Daily Writing Prompt widget appears on your WordPress dashboard and shows you a new writing prompt. It’s a simple way to beat writer’s block, build a regular writing habit, and connect with other writers in the WordPress.com Reader who are answering the same prompt.

Requirements

• An active Jetpack connection to WordPress.com
• No paid plan required — the widget is available on all connected Jetpack sites at no cost
• No module or setting to enable — the widget appears automatically once Jetpack is connected

How the widget works

The Daily Writing Prompt widget appears on your Dashboard (WP Admin → Dashboard) once your site is connected to WordPress.com via Jetpack.

Prompts are provided daily by WordPress.com and are the same prompts shown to writers across WordPress.com and Jetpack sites.

Each day, the widget shows a new prompt. You can use the Previous (←) and Next (→) arrows to browse recent prompts if you’d like a different one to answer. The widget also shows profile pictures of other writers who have already responded to the prompt, giving you a sense of the community around it.

The widget displays the Jetpack logo in its footer, consistent with other Jetpack dashboard widgets.

Answering a prompt

To respond to a prompt, click the Post your answer button. This opens the WordPress post editor with the prompt pre-loaded as context. Your post will be automatically tagged with dailyprompt so it can be discovered by others writing about the same topic.

You can write your response like any other post — add images, format your text, set a category — then publish when you’re ready.

Your response to the prompt will appear in the Reader. When you answer a prompt and publish your post, it will be discoverable in the WordPress.com Reader under that day’s prompt, alongside responses from other writers.

Viewing other response

Click the View responses link in the widget to browse posts from other writers who answered the same prompt. This opens the WordPress.com Reader, accessible from the Reader icon in your admin bar. From there you can read, like, and comment on other responses.

Hiding the widget

The Daily Writing Prompt widget appears on your dashboard by default. Since there is not a dedicated toggle to turn it off, if you prefer not to see it, you can hide it using WordPress’s built-in Screen Options:

1. Go to Dashboard in wp-admin.
2. Click Screen Options in the top-right corner of the page.
3. Uncheck Daily Writing Prompt.

The widget will no longer appear on your dashboard. You can re-enable it at any time by following the same steps and checking the box again.
