We at the Jetpack VaultPress Backup team have spent over a year devising and implementing a novel method to restore website backups in a secure, performant, and efficient way over HTTPS. We came up with a bespoke binary format to transfer your website’s resources (posts, comments, images) back to your website when restoring it.

Our bespoke binary format enables us to copy data over HTTPS very efficiently while preserving your website’s resources (CPU, RAM, I/O) at the same time, leading to blazing-fast restore speeds with solid reliability.
For example, a WordPress website hosted in the United States with 420 posts, 4500 high-definition images, and 40 plugins, all taking up ~3 GB of disk space, used to take about 20 minutes to fully restore from a backup. Now, it takes a mere 5 minutes to do the same restore — about 4 times faster.
A similar website hosted in Singapore used to take a bit more than 4 hours to restore (due to increased network latency). Now the very same restore takes only 24 minutes to do — that’s about 10 times faster.
