Use Jetpack AI to generate alt text and captions

Jetpack AI can automatically generate descriptive alt texts and captions for your images. This feature is integrated directly into the Image block and can be accessed via the block toolbar.

Here is how:

  1. Select the Image block in the editor.
  2. Click the AI Assistant Sparkles ✨ icon in the block toolbar.
  3. Choose one or both of the options:
    • Generate alt text – AI will analyze the image and generate an alternative text. It will appear in the Alternative Text field in the sidebar Block settings.
    • Generate caption – AI will analyze the image and add a caption.
  4. The generated text can be edited as needed before publishing your content.

Why Alt Text Matters

Alt text improves accessibility, SEO, and user experience.

  • Accessibility: Screen readers use alt text to describe images to visually impaired users. This helps make websites more inclusive.
  • SEO: Search engines rely on alt text to understand image content. Well-written alt text can improve rankings and helps images appear in search results.
  • User experience: If an image doesn’t load, alt text provides context so users still understand the content.
  • Compliance: Many accessibility guidelines, like WCAG, require alt text for images.
