Reconnect and reinstall Jetpack

Sometimes the simplest solution is the one that works, and “turn it off and on again” is no exception. Disconnecting and reconnecting Jetpack will often fix connection problems and help with errors encountered while activating settings. It’s generally the best place to start!

Disconnect Jetpack

In WP Admin, Jetpack can be disconnected from Jetpack → My Jetpack → Connections. Similarly, you can disconnect from Jetpack via the Connector card at Settings → Connectors.

If you need further guidance or help with screenshots, please see this detailed documentation about disconnecting Jetpack.

Disconnect using My Jetpack

You can disconnect Jetpack from My Jetpack as long as you are a non-admin user with a contributor role or higher. To do this:

  1. Go to Jetpack → My Jetpack.
  2. Under Connection, click on the connection status link to manage.
  3. On the modal that shows up, click Disconnect Jetpack.
  4. Follow the rest of the prompts until the disconnection is confirmed complete.

Diconnect using the Connector Card

You can also manage your WordPress.com connection from the Connector Card. Go to Settings → Connectors and click Details on the WordPress.com card.

  • To disconnect your personal WordPress.com account (while keeping the site connected): click Disconnect account.
  • To disconnect the site entirely from WordPress.com: click Disconnect site in the footer of the details panel.

Reconnect Jetpack

In WP Admin, Jetpack can be reconnected from Jetpack → My Jetpack, or via the Connector card at Settings → Connectors.

Reconnect using My Jetpack

If you’re an admin user, you can reconnect to Jetpack by:

  1. In WP Admin, go to Jetpack → My Jetpack and click the Supercharge my site button.
  2. Check that you’re connecting to the correct WordPress.com account and click Approve.

You can also connect/reconnect Jetpack from My Jetpack if you’re a non-admin user with a contributor role or higher (WordPress roles explained). To do this:

  1. Go to Jetpack → My Jetpack.
  2. Under Connection, click Connect my account.
  3. You will then be prompted to connect your user account. Click the button Connect account.
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to connect your WordPress.com account.

Some things to keep note of are:

  • A site administrator must connect Jetpack to WordPress.com first before non-admins are allowed to connect to their own WordPress.com account.
  • Connections from non-admins have some limitations compared to the primary admin connection (learn more about license activation and how roles affect it).

Reconnect using the Connector Card

If your site has no active WordPress.com connection, go to Settings → Connectors. The WordPress.com card will show a Connect button. Click it to start the site registration and authorization flow.

If the site is registered but has no connected owner, the card shows a “Site connected” badge and a prompt to connect a user account. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the connection.

Reinstall Jetpack

In some cases, a simple reconnection may not be enough. The next step is to completely delete Jetpack and install a fresh copy, then reconnect.

  1. If Jetpack is still connected, disconnect it following the instructions above.
  2. In WP Admin, go to Plugins → Installed Plugins, scroll to find “Jetpack” and click Deactivate.
Screenshot of the Jetpack plugin in the plugin sections of WP Admin. There is an option to Deactivate it.
  1. When the page has refreshed, find Jetpack again and click Delete.
  2. To reinstall, go to Plugins → Add New, search for “Jetpack” and click Install Now for “Jetpack – WP Security, Backup, Speed, & Growth”.
  3. After the plugin is installed, click Activate.
  4. After activation, you can reconnect Jetpack, following the instructions above.

Stats, followers, and settings retention when disconnecting or deleting Jetpack

When you disconnect Jetpack, no data are lost (including stats and followers). Your settings will be restored when you reconnect.

Stats cannot be collected while Jetpack is disconnected, so if your site stays disconnected for some time, you may see a gap in your stats after you reconnect.

When you delete Jetpack, no data are lost (including stats and followers). But your settings will be reset, so you’ll need to set them again after reinstalling and reconnecting.

Deactivating Jetpack via FTP

If Jetpack causes a critical error on your site that results in loss of access your WP Admin, there are ways to deactivate it without needing to log into the site’s WP Admin. Please see this documentation for how to disable Jetpack by using a FTP client to access your site’s files on your host server.
