Understanding Tax on Jetpack Purchases

Depending on where you are located, consumption-based tax may apply to your Jetpack subscription. Know how tax is calculated, who may qualify for an exemption, and how to manage your tax details.

The info below applies to Jetpack plans purchased through Jetpack.com. For billing on plans issued through Jetpack Manage (formerly Pro Dashboard), refer to the Jetpack Manage Billing and Payments page.

How tax applies to Jetpack subscriptions

Jetpack is required to collect consumption-based tax in many regions around the world. Depending on your country or territory, this charge may be labelled as:

  • VAT (Value Added Tax): common across the EU, UK, and other regions.
  • GST (Goods and Services Tax): used in countries such as Australia, Canada, India, and New Zealand.
  • Consumption Tax (CT): applied in Japan and certain other jurisdictions.

When you purchase or renew a Jetpack plan, the applicable tax is calculated automatically based on the billing address associated with your WordPress.com account.

Where to find the tax charge

You can find the tax charge in two different places:

  • At checkout: Tax appears as a separate line item before you confirm your purchase.
  • On your receipt: you can view and download past receipts from your Billing History page. Each receipt includes a breakdown of the tax charged.

If you need to add or change the billing details that appear on your receipts (such as a business name or address), you can do so directly from a receipt on your Billing History page.

Exemptions for tax-registered businesses

If your business is registered for VAT, GST, or an equivalent consumption tax, you may be eligible to purchase Jetpack plans without being charged tax at checkout.

To take advantage of this exemption, you will need to provide a valid tax identification number (such as a VAT ID or GST ID) in your account. If no tax details are on file, the standard tax rate for your location will be applied automatically.

Validating your tax ID

  • EU-based businesses: your VAT ID is verified through the European Commission’s VAT Information Exchange System (VIES). You can check whether your number is valid using the VIES lookup tool, or consult their frequently asked questions. If your VAT ID is not yet registered, you will need to obtain one from the tax authority in your country.
  • Businesses outside the EU: tax rules vary by region. We recommend consulting your local tax authority or accountant to confirm whether your business qualifies for an exemption on digital service purchases.

Important note for Ireland-based customers

Automattic, the company behind Jetpack, is incorporated in Ireland. Under Irish tax law, VAT must be charged on all transactions within Ireland, including purchases made by VAT-registered Irish businesses. This is a legal requirement and cannot be waived.

Exemptions for qualifying organisations

Certain organisations, such as non-profits, government agencies, or educational institutions, may be exempt from sales tax or consumption tax under the laws of their state or country. These exemptions are determined by your local or national tax authority, not by Jetpack or Automattic.

If you believe your organisation qualifies for a tax exemption, we recommend confirming your eligibility with your tax adviser or the relevant government body first.

Once confirmed, you can submit your exemption documentation to us by contacting Jetpack support. Please include:

  1. Organisation name: the registered name of your tax-exempt entity.
  2. Proof of exemption: an official tax exemption certificate or equivalent documentation issued by your government.
  3. Any supplementary details: some jurisdictions require additional forms or identifiers. Include anything your government specifies.

Our team will review your submission and apply the exemption to your account where applicable.

Requesting a Tax Residency Certificate

A Tax Residency Certificate (sometimes called a Certificate of Tax Residence or Certificate of Fiscal Residence) confirms the tax jurisdiction of the entity you transacted with. You may need this document for your own tax compliance, withholding tax claims, or reporting obligations.

To request a certificate, contact Jetpack support and include:

  • The tax year(s) you need the certificate to cover.
  • A brief explanation of why the certificate is required (e.g., withholding tax reclaim, audit compliance, etc.).

We will provide the appropriate certificate based on the Automattic entity responsible for processing transactions in your region.

Requesting a W-9 form

If you require a W-9 tax form (Request for Taxpayer Identification Number and Certification) for your accounting or vendor records, please contact Jetpack support to request one.

Adding or updating your tax details

You can add or update your VAT, GST, or consumption tax ID directly from your WordPress.com account – follow the step-by-step guide on this page.

Reverse a tax charge

If you were charged VAT or another consumption tax in error. for example, because your valid tax ID was not yet on file at the time of purchase, please contact Jetpack support with your tax ID and country code. Our team will review and, where applicable, arrange a tax reversal.
