Learn how to manage Jetpack and its features within the Block Editor.
When you edit posts or pages using the WordPress Block Editor, Jetpack adds a sidebar panel and an icon in the top toolbar that gives you quick access to Jetpack features like the AI Assistant, Social sharing, SEO settings, and more.
If the Jetpack icon has disappeared from your toolbar, or if Jetpack features aren’t displaying as expected, it’s likely related to the Block Editor’s built-in preferences and pinning behavior.
The Jetpack Sidebar Panel
When editing a post or page, you can open the Jetpack sidebar panel by clicking the Jetpack icon (the green Jetpack logo) in the top right toolbar of the editor. This panel typically includes:
- Jetpack AI Assistant: AI-powered writing tools (if available on your plan).
- Social sharing: options to auto-share your post to connected social media accounts.
- SEO: title and description previews for search engines.
- Social Image Preview: how your post will appear when shared on social platforms.
- Likes and Sharing: toggle post-level sharing buttons and Like options.
The features visible in the Jetpack sidebar depend on your Jetpack plan and which modules are active.
Pinning and unpinning Jetpack in the toolbar
The Block Editor allows you to pin or unpin plugin icons from the top toolbar. If the Jetpack icon is missing from your toolbar, it has likely been unpinned.
To pin Jetpack back to the toolbar:
- Open the Block Editor on any post or page.
- Click the ⋮ (Options/More) menu in the top-right corner of the editor (the three vertical dots).
- Select Preferences.
- In the Preferences window, there is no dedicated “Plugins” tab in all WordPress versions, but the pinning is controlled directly from the editor.
- Alternatively, if Jetpack is currently showing in the sidebar, look for the star/pin icon at the top of the Jetpack panel and click it to pin Jetpack to the toolbar.
To unpin Jetpack from the toolbar:
- Click the Jetpack icon in the top toolbar to open its panel.
- At the top of the Jetpack panel, click the pin icon (or the three-dot menu within the panel header).
- Select Unpin from toolbar.
When unpinned, Jetpack is still accessible: you can find it through the ⋮ (Options) menu or via the Plugins section in the editor sidebar.
Note: Pinning and unpinning is a per-user browser preference. It is stored locally, so if you switch browsers or clear your browser data, your pinning preferences may reset.
Block Editor preferences that affect how Jetpack displays
Beyond pinning, several Block Editor preferences can change how Jetpack features appear or behave in the editor. You can access these through Options (⋮) → Preferences in the top-right corner of the editor.
Appearance Preferences
| Preference | Effect on Jetpack |
|---|---|
| Top toolbar | When enabled, all block toolbars are consolidated into a single top row. This does not hide the Jetpack icon but changes the overall toolbar layout, which can make it less immediately visible in a busier toolbar. |
| Spotlight mode | Dims all blocks except the one currently selected. Does not affect the Jetpack sidebar, but may change your visual focus away from sidebar panels. |
| Fullscreen mode | Hides the WordPress admin sidebar and menu. The Jetpack icon in the editor toolbar remains unaffected, but if you are used to accessing Jetpack settings via wp-admin navigation, you’ll need to exit fullscreen first. |
Blocks Preferences
| Preference | Effect on Jetpack |
|---|---|
| Show most used blocks | When enabled, frequently used blocks (potentially including Jetpack blocks) appear in a “Most Used” category in the block inserter, making them faster to find. |
| Manage block visibility | Disable blocks that you don’t want to appear in the inserter. They can always be toggled back on later. |
Panels Preferences
This section controls which document-level panels appear in the editor sidebar under the Post/Page tab. Several of these directly correspond to Jetpack features:
| Panel Toggle | What It Controls |
|---|---|
| Likes & Sharing | Shows/hides the Jetpack Likes and Sharing Buttons toggle for the post. If disabled, you won’t see the option to turn likes or sharing buttons on/off for individual posts. |
| Jetpack Social | Shows/hides the social media sharing panel where you connect and configure auto-sharing to social networks. If disabled, the Social sharing options for the post won’t appear in the sidebar. |
| SEO | Shows/hides the Jetpack SEO panel for editing your post’s search engine title and meta description. |
| Social Image Preview | Shows/hides the social media image preview panel. |
Troubleshooting Jetpack icon or features missing
If you can’t find Jetpack in the Block Editor, work through these steps:
- Check pinning status: open the ⋮ menu in the editor toolbar and look for Jetpack under the available plugin panels. Re-pin it if needed.
- Check Preferences → Panels: make sure the relevant Jetpack panels (Likes & Sharing, Jetpack Social, SEO, etc.) are toggled on.
- Try a different browser or incognito window: since pinning and preferences are stored in the browser, this helps determine if it’s a local settings issue.
- Clear browser cache and cookies: cached editor state can sometimes cause UI elements to not render correctly.
- Check Jetpack module status: go to WP Admin → Jetpack → Settings and confirm the relevant modules (Jetpack Social, Likes, etc.) are active. A deactivated module won’t show its panel in the editor regardless of preferences.
- Check your Jetpack plan: some features require a paid Jetpack plan. If the feature isn’t available on your plan, its panel won’t appear.
- Plugin or theme conflicts: temporarily switch to a default theme and deactivate other plugins to see if the Jetpack editor panel returns.
