Insert an image slideshow into a post or page with the Jetpack Slideshow block.
The Slideshow Block is a part of the Jetpack Blocks suite and is available on all Jetpack-connected sites. The block is activated by default, and it does not require a paid upgrade to use. See our Jetpack Blocks article to learn about the available blocks and how to activate them.
Jetpack Blocks require the Block Editor (also referred to as the Gutenberg editor). If you’ve installed the Classic Editor plugin, you have a few options:
- Deactivate the Classic Editor: Go to Plugins → Installed Plugins in your WP Admin and deactivate the Classic Editor plugin.
- Enable both editors: If you prefer flexibility, navigate to Settings → Writing in your WP Admin (not the menu under Jetpack settings). Set Allow users to switch editors to Yes. You will only see these options if you have the Classic Editor plugin installed and active.
Some custom themes or plugins may prevent you from using the Block Editor. In that case, please contact the support team for the plugin or theme for further assistance.
For more details, see Using Blocks and the Classic Editor.
Add and set up the Slideshow block
You can add the Slideshow block by searching for it and/or selecting it from the Jetpack section of the block selector. See the Jetpack Blocks page for detailed instructions on adding blocks. The Jetpack Slideshow block has a green icon.
Once selected, the block will appear in your WordPress editor.
- To add pictures to your slideshow, you can choose between different options:
- Drag images from your computer onto the Slideshow block.
- Select files from your image libraries.
- When selecting files from your libraries, you have more options to choose from:
- Upload Button: you can access your computer library.
- Select Images: you can access different libraries such as your WordPress Media Library, your phone, Google Photos, Pexels Free photos, and Openverse.
- Generate images via AI: Add a description of the image you want the AI to generate. Please note that this is subject to the requests needed by the AI and your available requests.
- To keep editing the slideshow—for example, if you need to change the image addition source—click Edit. You can manage the slideshow via the Gallery section of your Media Library.
- Once you’ve selected your images, you can drag them to rearrange and optionally add alt text, titles, captions, and descriptions. Once your gallery is ready, click Update Gallery.
- You can then preview your slideshow right in the block editor.
Block Toolbar
Click on the block to display the block toolbar. The Slideshow block offers the following options in its toolbar:
- Alignment options: align your slideshow to the centre, wide width, or full width.
- Edit Slideshow: rearrange images and add/edit captions.
- More options: the three vertical dots contain options to duplicate, group, lock, rename, delete, and more.
Block Settings
Every block has specific options in the editor sidebar, which differ from those in the block toolbar. If you do not see the sidebar, click the ‘cog’ (wheel) icon next to the Publish or Update button.
You can customize the following settings from the Slideshow block settings :
- Autoplay: enable this option to have your slideshow move between images automatically. When enabled, your slideshow will include a pause button so your viewers can pause the slideshow. You can also select the delay’s length (in seconds) between automatic transitions.
- Effects: choose the effect you want for your slide transitions – Slide or Fade. You can update this option for slideshows, even if the autoplay feature isn’t turned on.
- Image Settings: select the size of the images displayed in the slideshow.
- Advanced: add a CSS class to your block, write custom CSS and style the block as you see fit.
