Learn why your subscribers may not be receiving your newsletter emails and how to resolve the most common delivery issues.
If your subscribers are not receiving your newsletter emails, there are several possible causes. This guide walks through the most common issues and how to address them using WP Admin.
Verifying subscriber status
When someone subscribes to your newsletter, they receive a confirmation email. They must click the verification link in that email before they can receive your posts. Until they verify their address, they remain in a pending state and will not receive newsletters.
To check a subscriber’s status:
- Go to Jetpack → Subscribers in WP Admin.
- Review the list of subscribers.
- Look for subscribers marked as Not Confirmed.
You can view a list of subscriber statuses and their definitions here.
Subscribers who have not verified their email address can request a new verification email from their subscription management page. For privacy and compliance reasons, you cannot manually verify a subscriber on their behalf. This helps protect your site from spam signups and ensures compliance with email regulations.
Bounced emails and spam reports
Email addresses that bounce or report your messages as spam are automatically removed from active delivery. This protects the sender’s reputation and helps ensure future emails reach inboxes.
This can happen when:
- The subscriber’s email address no longer exists.
- The subscriber’s mailbox is full.
- The subscriber marked your email as spam.
- The subscriber’s email provider rejected the message.
If a subscriber contacts you saying they did not receive your email, ask them to check their spam or junk folder. They can also add your sending address to their contacts and whitelist emails from donotreply@wordpress.com with their email provider.
Subscribers who have hard bounced or reported spam cannot be manually re-added to active delivery. They would need to resubscribe using a valid email address if eligible.
Subscriber preferences and opt-outs
Subscribers control their own email preferences. They may have chosen to stop or limit delivery.
Subscribers can:
- Unsubscribe completely.
- Change their delivery frequency from instant to a daily or weekly digest.
- Pause email delivery temporarily.
You cannot override a subscriber’s preferences. If someone wants to resume receiving emails, they can use the link in any previous newsletter email to manage their settings or subscribe again through your site.
Content filtering
In some cases, emails may be filtered or blocked by receiving mail servers if the content triggers spam filters.
Common triggers include:
- Excessive promotional language such as “FREE!” or “ACT NOW!”
- Too many links or images with very little text.
- Links to suspicious or flagged domains.
- Content that violates terms of service.
If you suspect content filtering, review your post and ensure there is a healthy balance of text and images. Avoid URL shorteners and use full links instead. Reducing overly promotional language can also help improve deliverability.
Self-hosted WordPress considerations
Jetpack Newsletter emails are sent through WordPress.com, but your site setup can still affect how subscriptions and newsletter triggers behave.
Plugin conflicts can interfere with subscriptions or prevent newsletter emails from being triggered correctly. This is most common with other email, form, or optimization plugins. Plugins can be temporarily disabled to test whether there is a conflict.
Checking email status
You can review the status of your newsletter sends directly in WP Admin:
- Go to WP Admin dashboard → Stats → Subscribers tab
- Click on an email in the Emails section to view its delivery statistics.
Delivery statistics can help you identify patterns such as high bounce rates or low engagement that may indicate a deliverability issue.
