Generate Alt Text and Captions with Jetpack AI in the Post Editor

Jetpack AI helps you generate alternative text and captions for your images, improving accessibility, content quality, and search engine visibility.

Requirements for using Jetpack AI to create alt text and captions

Jetpack AI-powered alt text and caption generation requires a website connected to Jetpack, using the block editor with Jetpack Blocks activated. For more details, check the Requirements.

The AI-powered alt text and caption generation only works for images in these formats: JPEG, PNG, WEBP, GIF.

Cost and Usage Limitations

Each AI-generated alt text or caption is counted as one AI request. Each successful generation counts as one request, whether you keep the result or not.

Jetpack AI offers you 20 free requests to get started. For more information about upgrading, please refer to our detailed Usage limitations and upgrades guide.

Automatic metadata for AI-generated images

When you generate a new image using Jetpack AI, whether from the block editor or the Media Library, the image’s alt text, title, caption, and description are automatically created for you. No additional steps are needed.

You can review and edit this metadata at any time by following the steps below.

Generate or update metadata for existing images

For images you’ve uploaded yourself or images where you want to update the auto-generated metadata, you can use Jetpack AI to generate alt text, titles, captions, and descriptions.

  1. Select an image in the block editor, or open an image from Media → Library in list view.
  2. Click Edit with AI to open the AI image editor.
  3. Click Image Info at the top of the editor.
  4. You will see fields for TitleCaptionDescription, and Alt Text. Click the Regenerate button next to any field to have Jetpack AI generate new content for that field.
  5. Review the generated text and make any manual edits as needed.
  6. Click Save to apply your changes.

Why Alt Text Matters

Alt text improves accessibility, SEO, and user experience.

  • Accessibility: Screen readers use alt text to describe images to visually impaired users. This helps make websites more inclusive.
  • SEO: Search engines rely on alt text to understand image content. Well-written alt text can improve rankings and helps images appear in search results.
  • User experience: If an image doesn’t load, alt text provides context so users still understand the content.
  • Compliance: Many accessibility guidelines, like WCAG, require alt text for images.
