Requirements for Jetpack AI image generation
AI-powered image generation requires a website connected to Jetpack (Jetpack plugin version 15.7 or higher), using the block editor with Jetpack Blocks activated. For more details, check the Requirements.
Cost and Usage limitations for Jetpack AI’s image generation
One image generation is equivalent to 1 request. You are charged 1 request each time an image is successfully generated, regardless of whether you use it in your content or not. All generated images are stored in your Media Library and are available for any future use.
Failed image generations do not count toward your free request limit.

How to generate images with Jetpack AI
Jetpack AI image generator creates images based on your prompts. The Generate Image option is integrated in the following blocks:
You will also find the Generate Image button and the option in the Select Image and Select Media menus. The Select Image / Media menus are available in blocks that access your Media Library (Image, Gallery, Slideshow, and also Cover Block, Media and Text Block, Image Compare Block, and Tiled Gallery Block).

Generate an image using the Image Block
- Add an Image Block to your post or page in the editor.
- Click Generate Image available alongside options to Upload, Select Image, or Insert from URL.
- Jetpack AI will open a pop-up window.
- Start by adding the prompt for your image, or by selecting one of the pre-made options. If the image is intended to illustrate your entire post or page’s content, consider generating it as a featured image instead.
- You can choose the style of the image (such as Line Art or Anime) in the dropdown, or adjust the size from the Aspect Ratio dropdown.
- Press
Enteron your keyboard. - The screen will show a loading animation while the image is created.
- Once ready, you can use the image (click Save & Apply) or you can adjust the prompt and style to create a new image. Previously generated images remain available for selection.
These steps apply when starting from a Gallery block, Slideshow block, or using a Select Image and Select Media menu.
Replace an image using Generate with AI
- Select an Image Block and click Replace.
- Click the Generate Image option in the menu to open the AI image generator.
Edit an image using Generate with AI
- Select an Image Block.
- Click Edit with AI to open the AI image generator.
- Add the prompt for your image, or select one of the pre-made options.
- Click Save & Apply to save your changes
You will see the new image replace the existing image automatically. Both images exist in your Media Library if you want to restore the previous image or use it elsewhere on your site.
Generate and edit images from the Media Library
In addition to generating images from within the block editor, you can use Jetpack AI to create new images and edit existing ones directly from your site’s Media Library.
Generate a new image from the Media Library
- In your WP Admin, go to Media → Library.
- Click the Generate Image button at the top of the screen.
- Enter a prompt describing the image you want to create, or select one from the pre-made options, then press
Enteron your keyboard. - Wait a few moments for the image to generate.
- Click Save to add the image to your Media Library, or refine the image by entering additional prompts
Edit an existing image with AI
- In your WP Admin, go to Media → Library.
- Switch to list view by clicking the list icon near the top of the screen.
- Find the image you want to edit and click the Edit with AI action that appears in its row.
- Describe the change you want in the prompt box. For example: “Change the background color to blue” or “Crop this to a square.”
- Review the result. You can continue adding prompts to make further adjustments.
- Click Save to save the edited image.
Changes made to images in the Media Library are saved to the original file. However, the original file can be restored at any time by following these steps:
- In your WP Admin, go to Media → Library.
- Click on the name of the image file you want to edit.
- Below the preview of the image, click the “Edit Image” button.
- In the Edit media page, click the “Restore original image” text to expand the section.
- Click the “Restore image” button.
- Click “Cancel Editing” to save the restored image.
Specifics about your Jetpack AI-generated images
Jetpack AI generates images in PNG format with a default resolution of 1024×1024 pixels. To ensure optimal display, consider using our Site Accelerator feature.

How to troubleshoot errors with Jetpack AI image generation
If image generation fails for any reason, the pop-up will display an error message with some details about the error. When this happens, you can always retry by clicking the Try again button. Trying again can help with intermittent errors, such as connection issues with OpenAI services.
Limitations of the content Jetpack AI can generate
The Jetpack AI tool cannot generate images that:
- Depict copyrighted characters, or other protected images.
- Represent specific politicians, celebrities, or other public figures.
- Mimic the style of artists or creative professionals whose latest work was created post-1912.
Should content policy violations prevent image generation, you will see a proper error message.
