Add File Uploads to your Contact forms

Add the File Upload Field block to your contact forms, so visitors can attach documents, images, and other files when they reach out.

With the File Upload Field block, you can add an upload field to your contact forms. This allows visitors to easily attach files, images, or documents, so you can collect extra information with their submission.

Add a File Upload Field

To let visitors attach files through your form, here’s how to add a File Upload Field:

  1. Open the page or post where you want to add your form, or create a new form. You can read how to do it on this page.
  2. In the List View, find the field that will come before or after the new upload field.
  3. Click the Options icon (?) in the toolbar, then choose Add before or Add after to insert a new block.
  4. Click the + (plus icon) block inserter and search for File Upload Field.
  5. Select File Upload Field from the block options to place it in your form – the icon is green.
  6. Once you’re done, click Save or Publish in the top-right corner of the WordPress editor to keep your changes.

You can style and adjust the file upload field the same way you customize any other form field.

Set how many files visitors can upload

A file upload field accepts one file. To let visitors attach more than one file to the same field:

  1. Select the File Upload Field block in your form.
  2. Open the block settings sidebar and find field settings.
  3. Set Maximum files to the number of files you want the field to accept.
  4. Click Save or Publish to keep your changes.

You can set any number from one to 10. Fields you added before this setting existed continue to accept one file until you change it.

When a field accepts more than one file, visitors can select several files at once in the file picker, or drag a group of files onto the upload area. Each file uploads as soon as the visitor picks it, before they submit the form.

If a visitor offers more files than the field accepts, the field takes as many as it has room for and shows a message below the field explaining that the rest were not added. Visitors can remove a file with the × button next to it and add a different one.

Folder uploads are not supported. A visitor who drags a folder onto the upload area sees “Folder uploads are not supported” and needs to select the individual files inside it instead.

The text on the upload area is part of your form, so it does not change when you raise Maximum files. If it reads “Upload a file,” edit it to match the number of files the field now accepts.

Accessing Uploaded Files

After a visitor submits a form with an attached file, you can review the responses and manage uploaded files. Go to Jetpack → Forms → Responses in WP Admin. Select the submitter’s name to open their submission. You can download an uploaded file using the download icon, or preview it by clicking the file name.

A submission lists every file the visitor uploaded, so a field set to accept more than one file shows each of its files separately. Download and preview them one at a time.

Accepted File Formats

Accepted formats are PDF, Word documents, JPEG and PNG images, and audio files. Each file can be up to 20 MB.

The 20 MB limit applies to each file on its own, not to the submission as a whole. A field set to accept 10 files can receive up to 200 MB in a single submission.

Video uploads are not supported in form submissions. Folder uploads are not supported either.
