Jetpack 5.4: Date Picker in Contact Form, Comment Improvements, and Welcome Screens

Today’s release of Jetpack 5.4 includes the addition of a new field to our Contact Form editor, display improvements to Comments and how they integrate with themes, and welcome screens for users of our paid plans. We’ve also added a new search feature, currently in beta, that Jetpack Professional customers can help us test.

Let’s take a closer look at what we’ve included in this update.

Date picker added to Contact Form editor

We added a new field to the Contact Form editor that allows you to add a date picker to your forms.

You can now create forms with date pickers.

This allows you to ask visitors to submit delivery dates, their birthdays, the best day to contact them, or anything else you can think of.

Improvements to Comments and theme compatibility

We’ve made some improvements to how the Jetpack comment form is displayed in some themes.

When enabled on your site, the Comments feature should now display a form with a default height. There should also be no extra white space below it. Comments entered into the form will cause the height of the form to expand automatically.

Welcome screens added to paid plans

When purchasing a Jetpack Personal, Premium, or Professional plan, you’ll now see a welcome screen with some tips to help you make the most of the plan you just purchased.

Here’s what you might see if you purchase a Personal plan.

Jetpack Search (Beta) available for Professional plan customers

If you’ve purchased a Professional Plan for your Jetpack site, this new release will give you access to a new feature we’re currently still testing: Jetpack Search, powered by Elasticsearch.

To get started, go to Settings > Traffic on WordPress.com, and select a site using Jetpack 5.4 and a Professional plan. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and enable the search feature.

This feature is still in beta, and we’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback if you give it a try.

Miscellaneous updates and fixes

Finally, here are a few more updates we’ve made in 5.4:

  • Fixed some UI issues within the Jetpack settings interface for the Internet Explorer 11 browser.
  • The Simple Payments button received some minor display improvements.
  • Facebook embeds have received display improvements.
  • RTL style fixes for some shortcodes.
  • Added a new “Time Unit” setting to available widgets.
  • Third party plugin and theme authors can add new menu items to the WordPress.com toolbar.

Rich Email Content via Jetpack Subscriptions

If you post regularly on your blog you probably use various shortcodes to embed content on a regular basis (and if you don’t, learn more here as they’re super useful).

A shortcode is usually a line of plain text that might look like this:

shortcode

Jetpack converts this line of plain text into the necessary HTML and JavaScript needed to display the video directly on your blog post or website page.

You can just as easily embed videos from other services, picture galleries, Spotify playlists, Google Maps, and so much more.

Readers subscribing to your site using Jetpack’s (free) email subscriptions service would, until now, receive in their inbox the plain text version rather than the beautiful, embedded, rich version.

The latest version of Jetpack however solves this elegantly. Subscribers now receive email-friendly content and layout for over 200 of our most popular shortcodes so that your emails look the way you intended.

So now, you can expect your emails to look more like the email on the right of this:

This improvement, we hope, makes your Jetpack experience even better and continues bringing you closer to your readers and customers.

Upgrade to the latest version of Jetpack or install it today for free.

Pro Tip: Personal plan customers benefit from priority support and faster assistance.

Jetpack 3.9.5 and 3.9.6: Maintenance Releases

WordPress 4.5 will be released in a few weeks, and we’ve made updates to Jetpack to account for the significant changes that will be introduced in this new version of WordPress.

These updates have involved making sure that certain Jetpack features work properly in the Customizer view, namely adding support for selective refresh. Big thanks to @westonruter for contributing the code!

Other enhancements and bug fixes:

miguel

  • Contact Form: no longer calling the datepicker method if it’s not available.
  • Single Sign On: settings checkboxes now honor filters and constants that restrict certain sign-in modes.
  • Shortcodes: fixed a problem with Gist fetching.
  • Shortcodes: fixed invalid HTML5 markup in YouTube embed code.
  • Shortcodes: made Vimeo links work properly in case of multiple mixed uses in one post.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to 3.9.5:

Christopher Finke, Derek Smart, Elio Rivero, Igor Zinovyev, Jeremy Herve, Matt Wiebe, Michael Cain, Miguel Lezama, Mo Jangda, Philip John, Tammie Lister, and Weston Ruter.

Jetpack 3.9.6 was also released today to fix an issue with some comments incorrectly rendering video embeds. Our apologies! Consider it an early April Fools’ Day joke…

Jetpack 3.8.2 – Photon and YouTube Shortcode Fixes

Jetpack 3.8.2 is out! In this release, we focused on fixing a few specific and annoying bugs that popped up.

Jetpack – Supercharge your WordPress

Photon:

We fixed a regression created in version 3.8.1 where Photon did not respect some custom image sizes from other plugins or themes. Photon respects all image sizes again.

YouTube Shortcode:

WordPress 4.4 made some changes to the way Shortcodes are parsed, which broke our YouTube shortcode.  We’re now filtering this shortcode to output properly so you don’t need to go back update your shortcodes in your existing posts – we’ve taken care of that for you.

Wufoo Shortcode:

We’ve tightened up security in the Wufoo shortcode.  If you use this shortcode, you should upgrade to 3.8.2 as soon as possible.

Other minor fixes:

We’ve also cleared up a couple very minor bugs with Carousel, Publicize, Google+ widget, and Infinite Scroll.

Contributors for this release include Aaron Graham, Alex Mills, Alexander Concha, Brandon Kraft, Derek Smart, Eduardo Reveles, Elio Rivero, Eric Binnion, Igor Zinovyev, Jeremy Herve, Kat Hagan, Lance Willett, Miguel Lezama, Rocco Tripaldi, Sam Hotchkiss, and Takashi Irie.

Thank you for your contributions!

How to disable specific shortcodes in Jetpack

Jetpack includes many shortcodes allowing you to embed videos, audio files, images, and other media into your posts.

If you want to deactivate a specific shortcode without deactivating the Shortcodes module, you can add the following code to a functionality plugin. Please note that this will not work in a theme’s functions.php file due to the order in which WordPress loads plugins and themes and how we’re loading the shortcodes list.

function my_remove_shortcode_function( $shortcodes ) {
	$jetpack_shortcodes_dir = WP_CONTENT_DIR . '/plugins/jetpack/modules/shortcodes/';

	$shortcodes_to_unload = array( 'ted.php', 'soundcloud.php', );

	foreach ( $shortcodes_to_unload as $shortcode ) {
		if ( $key = array_search( $jetpack_shortcodes_dir . $shortcode, $shortcodes ) ) {
			unset( $shortcodes[$key] );
		}
	}

	return $shortcodes;
}
add_filter( 'jetpack_shortcodes_to_include', 'my_remove_shortcode_function' );

In the code above, you’ll need to add to or remove shortcodes from the $shortcodes_to_unload array. It requires the file name of the shortcode you want to deactivate.
