Jetpack VaultPress Backups and WooCommerce Sites

Jetpack offers a specialized backup and restore service called the Immutable Real-Time Objects feature for WooCommerce sites that are on one of our paid Jetpack VaultPress Backup plans (Jetpack VaultPress Backup, Jetpack Security, or Jetpack Complete).

Immutable Real-Time Objects explained

“Immutable Real-Time Objects” ensure that certain data, which Jetpack VaultPress Backup considers “unchangeable,” stays the same whenever you restore with Jetpack VaultPress Backup. For WooCommerce users, this means that specific important information won’t be altered or lost during the restore process.

Imagine restoring your site to a state from a week ago. With our immutable feature, your website would revert back to how it was one week ago, but all of the orders placed and any product modifications made over the past seven days would remain intact and unaltered. This ensures you never lose an order even if you restore the other content of your site.

How Does It Work?

A simplified explanation is when Jetpack Backup receives an update, it determines whether the change is immutable and keeps it if so. It locates these changes by considering the item’s characteristics, such as the type of object or post.

All recognized immutable changes are then conserved and applied during Jetpack VaultPress Backup’s restore process, seamlessly and without any need for special configuration on behalf of the user.

You can use our default site restore process to get the benefits of this feature.

Understanding its limitations

While the Immutable Real-Time Objects feature is powerful, it has some limitations.

Data not treated as immutable

These following will not be treated as immutable (or “unchangeable”):

  • Your site’s stock/inventory
  • Images added to a product description
  • Custom events triggered from purchase are not immutable. Items such as subscriptions may need to be reactivated after the restore.

Potential limits with restored products

Products that are restored by Jetpack may not be instantly ready for use in your WooCommerce store. Instead, they serve primarily as a reference point and may require additional configuration and verification before they can be used on a live site.

Real-time Requirement

Because the immutable feature is conditional upon receiving updates in real-time, any data that is not supplied in real-time cannot be treated as immutable.

High-Performance Order Storage (HPOS)

On sites using WooCommerce’s HPOS, Jetpack VaultPress Backup will backup orders in real-time. However, these orders will not appear in a site’s Activity Log.

Woo Products that Require a Jetpack Connection

WooCommerce is a powerful e-commerce plugin built for WordPress. Some WooCommerce extensions require a Jetpack connection in order to connect your site to the WordPress.com infrastructure. In this documentation, we explore those extensions.

If you are not using any of the WooCommerce plugins listed here, you do not need a Jetpack connection to your website.

WooCommerce Shipping

(Previously integrated in “WooCommerce Shipping & Tax”, known as WooCommerce Services).

WooCommerce Shipping requires a Jetpack Connection to connect to your WordPress.com account so that you can print shipping labels.

The connection can be created with or without Jetpack. If you have Jetpack already connected, WooCommerce Shipping will use this connection. Otherwise, the plugin will prompt you to connect your WordPress.com account.

For sites with multiple WordPress.com accounts connected, the site owner connection will be used to manage payments for your shipping labels. To change the site owner, refer to Transfer Your Jetpack Connection or Plan to Another User.

WooCommerce Tax

(Formerly “WooCommerce Shipping & Tax”, previously referred to as WooCommerce Services).

WooCommerce Tax requires a Jetpack Connection to connect to your WordPress.com account to enable automated tax calculation.

The connection can be created with or without Jetpack. If you have Jetpack already connected, WooCommerce Tax will use this connection. Otherwise, the plugin will prompt you to connect your WordPress.com account.

WooCommerce Mobile App

The WooCommerce Mobile App helps you manage your online store via a mobile app.

You will need Jetpack installed on your site if you want to access notifications and stats via the Woo Mobile app.

For guidance on setting up and troubleshooting notifications, please visit the WooCommerce documentation: Woo Mobile App notifications.

WooPayments

WooPayments is a fully integrated payment gateway developed by WooCommerce.

WooPayments requires a connection to your WordPress.com account. This connection can be created with or without Jetpack. If you have Jetpack activated and connected to your WordPress.com account, the Jetpack connection will automatically be used for these extensions. Otherwise, the connection will be created during your onboarding to WooPayments.

If the Jetpack connection is broken, WooPayments will stop working.

To resume WooPayments functionality, you will need to reconnect your site to WordPress.com. The simplest solution is to reconnect Jetpack. For other options, refer to the Connecting to WordPress.com with WooPayments article from Woo documentation.

Google for WooCommerce

Showcase your products to shoppers with Google for WooCommerce (formerly Google Listings & Ads).

Google for WooCommerce requires a connection to your WordPress.com account. This connection can be created with or without Jetpack. If you have Jetpack activated and connected to your WordPress.com account, the Jetpack connection will automatically be used for this extension.

If the Jetpack connection is broken, Google for WooCommerce will stop working.

To resume Google for WooCommerce functionality, please reconnect your site to WordPress.com in one of two ways:

WooCommerce Analytics

Help us make WooCommerce better for everyone by sharing additional usage tracking for users of WooCommerce and Jetpack.

To better understand how site visitors use WooCommerce — and so that we can efficiently and effectively improve the product — we track some activity on your site’s product pages, and cart and checkout.

By understanding how our customers are using WooCommerce, we can build more helpful features, write better documentation, and make WooCommerce a more useful platform.

What we’ll track

We track user behavior events and interactions including:

  • When products are viewed.
  • When a product is added to or removed from the cart.
  • When the checkout is viewed and an order processed.

These events are in addition to Jetpack analytics and use the same system. Analytics events will be attached directly to your WordPress.com account and are handled via a first-party system that Automattic owns and maintains.

Privacy Information

The WooCommerce Analytics module is activated by default when both the Jetpack and WooCommerce plugins are activated. You can deactivate it by following the guide to control Jetpack features on one page.

Activity Tracked
Site Owners / Users

We track several events around the settings of this feature: whether users can checkout with / without an account, whether an account can be created at checkout and if customers can checkout without an account, which payment / checkout options are available to be used.

Site Visitors

We track when site visitors start a session in the shop, view products, add and remove products from the cart, view checkout, and complete orders. We also track device used, whether users can check out with / without an account, whether an account can be created, and which payment / checkout options are available to be used.

Events include metadata such as a session ID for identifying the session (randomly generated), the user landing page URL, the current page URL; product name, product ID, quantity, and product category; unique user ID (randomly generated identifier); WooCommerce version; blocks used on cart & checkout pages.
Data Synced (Read More)
Site Owners / Users

We sync options that identify whether or not the feature is activated and how its available settings are configured.
