Sharing Buttons
Help your readers spread your message across the web via social media Sharing Buttons.
Give readers the tools to post your content to their networks. You can configure services to appear as icons, text, or both. Some services also display the number of times the post has been shared, as reported by that service.
Add Sharing Buttons via the Sharing Buttons Block
If you use a block-based theme, we recommend adding Sharing Buttons via the Block designed for this purpose. Follow these steps:
- Search for the Sharing Buttons Block in the Jetpack section of the block selector. See Jetpack Blocks for detailed instructions on adding blocks.
- After adding the Block, add one or more individual sharing services to the block.
- Adjust the Block settings to change the justification, orientation, and settings such as Icon + Text, Icon Only, or Text Only.
- If you wish, you can add the Block to a template so that it appears on every post or page.
Add Sharing Buttons from Jetpack Settings
You can reach the Sharing Buttons block vie the following ways:
- My Jetpack → Products → Sharing or
- Jetpack → Settings → Sharing.
What appears there depends on whether your site uses a block theme or a classic theme.
On a block theme, legacy sharing buttons cannot be customized in the Site Editor, because they are not blocks. Jetpack replaces the sharing buttons toggle with a button that takes you to the Sharing Buttons block instead.
If your site does not use legacy sharing buttons, click Open Site Editor. This opens your active theme’s Single template, which controls how individual posts display. Add the Sharing Buttons block to that template.
If your site already uses legacy sharing buttons, you will see Switch to Sharing Buttons block instead:
- Click Switch to Sharing Buttons block. This deactivates the legacy sharing buttons on your site.
- The button changes to Open Site Editor.
- Click Open Site Editor to open your theme’s Single template, then add the Sharing Buttons block.
On a classic theme, both screens keep the sharing buttons toggle and the configuration link. Block themes also keep the toggle when the Sharing Buttons block is unavailable on your site.
Add Sharing Buttons via Jetpack Settings (Legacy)
Jetpack manages legacy sharing buttons under Settings → Sharing in WP Admin, on both classic and block themes. On a block theme, the screen adds a notice recommending the Sharing Buttons block, with a “Switch to the Sharing Buttons block” button. Your existing settings stay available below the notice. Switching turns off the legacy sharing buttons on your site.
Add and configure Sharing Buttons
Once the Sharing Buttons feature is active, you can add them to your website by following these steps:
- Navigate to Jetpack → Settings → Sharing in your site’s WP Admin.
- Click on Configure your sharing buttons.
- Drag each service you want from Available Services into the first part of Enabled Services. Services there appear as their own buttons.
- Drag the enabled services into the order you want them to display on your site.
- Choose your preferred button style.
- Click Save Changes.
Add more Sharing buttons
To keep your sharing area short, drag extra services into the second part of Enabled Services. Jetpack hides those services behind a share button, and visitors see them when they click it.
Sharing Button Options
There are a few options that you can customize on your sharing buttons:
- Sharing label: Changes the text shown above your sharing buttons.
- Button style: Shows buttons as Icon + text, Icon only, Text only, or Official buttons.
- Disable CSS and JS: Stops Jetpack from loading the sharing buttons’ styles and scripts. Turn this on only if your theme already includes those files, because the buttons don’t work without them. This option is hidden while sharing buttons are turned off.
Facebook official sharing buttons are no longer supported due to changes on Facebook’s side. If the Facebook sharing button is not appearing on your site, switch the button style to Icon + Text, Icon Only, or Text Only — these styles work with all supported services, including Facebook.
The Official Buttons style does not work with Facebook. Selecting it will result in no Facebook button being displayed.
Choose where sharing buttons appear
The placement section at the bottom of Settings → Sharing controls where sharing buttons show: the front page, archive pages, and search results; posts; pages; and media. Like buttons use the same placement settings when they’re turned on, so the section heading names each feature it covers, such as Where sharing and Like buttons appear.
To change where sharing buttons appear:
- Go to Settings → Sharing in WP Admin.
- Scroll to the placement section at the bottom of the page.
- Select each place where the buttons should appear, and clear the rest.
- Click the “Save Changes” button.
The Sharing buttons section shows where the buttons currently appear, for example “Sharing buttons currently appear on: Posts, Pages.”
Display the number of likes
Some services allow share counts to be displayed, and they all count them differently. For example, Facebook Share numbers are a total of shares + likes + comments on Facebook.
Some services display share counts when the button style is set to Official Buttons. Facebook does not support the Official Buttons style — use Icon + Text, Icon Only, or Text Only for Facebook sharing. Pinterest’s Pin-It Button will only show on images if you are using the Official Buttons style.
These totals are reliant on the site’s URL. If your URL changes in any way (for example, changing from http to https), the Sharing Button counts will be reset to zero. Unfortunately, there is no way for us to recover the old totals.
Supported services
The following services are currently supported for Sharing Buttons (others may be added in the future.)
- Bluesky
- Email*
- Mastodon
- Nextdoor
- Telegram
- Threads
- Tumblr
- X/Twitter
*Jetpack uses a mailto: link to share via email. The visitor must have an email client that can handle the link.
Related: let visitors like your posts with Likes, and link to your social profiles with the Social Icons widget.

If you add your Twitter/X username to the Sharing settings, it will be published with the post sharing your content. The post title and permalink will also be shared with any of the services. Additional activity tracking: IP address, WordPress.com user ID, WordPress.com username, WordPress.com-connected site ID and URL, Jetpack version, user agent, visiting URL, referring URL, timestamp of event, browser language, country code. |
Site Visitors
When official sharing buttons are active on the site, each button loads content directly from its service in order to display the button as well as information and tools for the sharing party. As a result, each service can in turn collect information about the sharing party. When a non-official Pinterest sharing button is active on the site, information such as the sharing party’s IP address as well as the page URL will be made available to Pinterest, so sharing counts can be displayed next to the button. In addition, Pinterest may add cookies to the page. Additionally, if reCAPTCHA (by Google) is enabled by the site owner, the sharing party’s IP address will be shared with that service. You can find Google’s privacy policy here. |
