Manage your site’s SEO with Jetpack SEO
Last updated:
Control how search engines, AI tools, and social networks see your site from one page in WP Admin.
From Jetpack 16.4, Jetpack SEO has its own page at Jetpack → SEO. It brings together SEO Tools, Sitemaps, site verification, and AI crawler controls, which earlier versions of Jetpack kept at Jetpack → Settings → Traffic.
Requirements for Jetpack SEO
The SEO page needs:
- The Jetpack plugin, version 16.4 or later, connected to your WordPress.com account.
- An administrator account on the site.
The SEO page is free. The AI SEO Enhancer is the only part that needs a paid plan: Jetpack Pro or Jetpack Complete.
New sites see Jetpack → SEO as soon as Jetpack 16.4 is set up. Sites that had Jetpack before 16.4 switch to the new page themselves (see the next section). After you update Jetpack, the page or the switch can take up to a day to appear, while WordPress.com refreshes your site’s plan data.
Switch to the SEO page
If your site had Jetpack before version 16.4, your SEO settings stay at Jetpack → Settings → Traffic until you switch. To switch to the SEO page:
- Go to Jetpack → Settings in WP Admin and click the Traffic tab.
- In the “SEO has a new home” banner, click “Use the new experience“.
You can also switch from the “A fresh way to manage your SEO” card in My Jetpack, with its “Try the new SEO experience” button.
Switching turns on SEO Tools if they were off. Your existing settings come with you. You can’t switch back to the old screen afterwards.
After you switch, the Traffic tab no longer shows the SEO, Canonical URLs, Sitemaps, or Site verification sections. Related Posts, Jetpack Stats, Blaze, and WP.me Shortlinks stay on the Traffic tab.
About the SEO page
The SEO page has four tabs:
- Overview shows whether search engines and AI tools can find your site, and how many of your posts have their SEO details filled in.
- Content lists your published posts and pages with their SEO details, so you can fix them one by one.
- GEO (generative engine optimization) controls how AI tools see and use your site.
- Settings holds the site-wide options: search engine visibility, sitemaps, site verification, schema, title structure, and the front-page description.
Check your site from the Overview tab
The Overview tab opens when you go to Jetpack → SEO in WP Admin. Each card has a button that opens the tab where you change it:
- Site visibility shows whether your site is open to search engines and whether your sitemap is published.
- Site verification shows which services (Google, Bing, Facebook, and any others with a code) have a verification code set.
- AI access shows how many answer engines and training crawlers you block, and whether your llms.txt file is published.
- Content SEO shows, for your published content, how much has a schema type, an SEO title, a meta description, and search visibility. Click a ring to open the Content tab, filtered to the posts still missing that item.
If SEO Tools is turned off, the page shows only an “Enable SEO tools” button. Click it to turn SEO Tools back on.
Edit SEO for a post or page
The Content tab lists every published post, page, and public custom post type, with its SEO title, meta description, schema type, and search visibility. To edit a post’s SEO details:
- Go to Jetpack → SEO in WP Admin and click the Content tab.
- Find the post. You can search, or filter by type, schema type, or missing details.
- Click the “Edit SEO” button on the post’s row.
- Fill in the “SEO title” and “Meta description” fields, and choose a Schema type: Default, Article, or FAQ. The Search engine preview shows how the result could look.
- Click Save.
Turning on “Hide from search engines” adds a noindex directive to the post and removes it from your sitemap.
Control AI access from the GEO tab
The GEO tab controls how AI tools find and use your content. It has these options:
- llms.txt: Turn on “Generate an llms.txt file” to publish a summary of your site for AI tools at yourjetpack.blog/llms.txt. It’s off by default and needs your site to be open to search engines.
- AI SEO Enhancer: Generates SEO titles, descriptions, and image alt text when you publish. It appears only with a plan that includes it. See SEO Tools.
- Answer engines: These AI search tools show your content in their answers, such as ChatGPT Search and Perplexity.
- Training crawlers: These bots collect content to train AI models, such as GPTBot and Google-Extended.
You can block each crawler with its own switch, or with “Block all“. Jetpack doesn’t block any crawler by default. The rules go into your site’s robots.txt, which you can check with “View your robots.txt“.
The crawler controls are replaced by a notice if your site is closed to search engines, has a static robots.txt file, or is a path-based multisite network.
Change SEO settings
The Settings tab holds Jetpack SEO’s site-wide options. To open it, go to Jetpack → SEO in WP Admin and click the Settings tab.
The options are covered on these pages:
- Site visibility and the XML sitemap: Sitemaps.
- Site verification: Site Verification Tools. Turn on “Enable site verification” before you add codes.
- Title structure, Front-page description, and Canonical URLs: SEO Tools.
- Schema and Author profile: these add structured data about your organization, a local business, breadcrumbs, and post authors to your pages.
- Search & social previews: these show how your front page could look on Google, Facebook, and X.
When another SEO plugin is active
If you also use Yoast SEO, All in One SEO, Rank Math, The SEO Framework, Slim SEO, SEOPress, or SEOKEY, that plugin manages your SEO output. The SEO page shows a notice naming it. While it’s active, Jetpack locks its title structure, front-page description, schema, and author profile settings, and doesn’t add canonical URLs or generate llms.txt.
Turn off Jetpack SEO
You turn off Jetpack SEO from the Advanced section of the Settings tab. To turn it off:
- Go to Jetpack → SEO in WP Admin and click the Settings tab.
- In the Advanced section, click “Disable Jetpack SEO“.
While Jetpack SEO is off, Jetpack stops using your saved titles and descriptions, stops adding structured data, and stops serving llms.txt and the AI crawler rules. Pages you hid from search engines become visible again and go back into your sitemap. Jetpack keeps everything you entered, so it’s all back when you turn Jetpack SEO on again.
