UTM URL Builder

Build UTM tracking URLs without manual input or external tools and make it easier to track website traffic and analyze marketing campaigns.

The UTM URL Builder, along with the UTM feature in general, is available to users with a commercial Jetpack Stats plan or as part of a Jetpack Complete bundle plan.

Overview

UTM codes are strings of text added to URLs that tell analytics tools specific information about the link. Our UTM URL Builder is a tool that helps you generate URLs with UTM parameters. These parameters allow you to track the effectiveness of your campaigns by identifying the source, medium, and campaign name. This guide will walk you through the steps to create a UTM-tagged URL, which you can then share through your preferred mediums.

Steps to create a UTM-tagged URL

  1. Open the UTM URL Builder: Access the UTM URL Builder tool from your Jetpack Stats dashboard under Stats. Scroll down to the UTM card and click the URL Builder button. A UTM Builder prompt will open up.
  2. Enter the Site or Post URL: In the Site or post URL field, enter the URL of the site or post you want to track. For example: yourjetpack.blog/sample-post
  3. Fill in the UTM parameters:
    • UTM source: Enter the source of the traffic. This identifies where the traffic is coming from. Common examples include the name of a search engine, newsletter, or social media platform. In this example, we can use: facebook
    • UTM medium: Enter the medium used. This specifies the delivery method, such as email, social, or ads. In this example, we use: social
    • UTM campaign: Enter the campaign name. This parameter helps to identify the specific product promotion or strategic campaign. In this example, we use: weeklies
  4. Review and copy the generated URL: After entering all the UTM parameters, the tool will generate a URL that includes these parameters.
  5. Copy the URL: Click the Copy to clipboard button to copy the generated URL. You can now share this URL in your respective campaigns to track the traffic effectively.

You can generate similar UTM-tagged URLs for multiple traffic sources, mediums, and campaign scenarios and distribute them to visitors through their respective channels.

What’s next: Reviewing traffic in Jetpack Stats

Once you’ve generated and distributed your UTM-tagged URLs, you’re now empowered to review your traffic from various mediums, campaigns, and sources. You can do so from the same Jetpack Stats dashboard in Stats, under the UTM card.

By regularly reviewing and analyzing traffic data from your UTM parameters, you can continuously improve your content strategies and drive better results for your site. You can read more on this at Harnessing UTM Stats for Precision Tracking.

Jetpack Stats: Honor Do Not Track (DNT)

Respect your visitors’ privacy by complying with their requests not to be tracked.

Do Not Track (DNT) is a feature in web browsers and websites that asks advertisers and other web software providers to not track individuals’ browsing habits. As a site owner, you can force the Jetpack Stats feature to honor any visitors with DNT enabled and not track their activity (i.e. post and page views) by adding the following code snippet to your site:

1add_filter( 'jetpack_honor_dnt_header_for_stats', '__return_true' );

See our guide for more about adding code snippets to your site, as well as our filter documentation.

We hope to add this as a user-facing setting to the Jetpack Stats in a future release.

If you’re using Jetpack to enable Google Analytics on your site, you can force Google Analytics to honor visitors with DNT enabled by adding this code snippet:

1add_filter( 'jetpack_honor_dnt_header_for_wga', '__return_true' );

Jetpack VideoPress video stats

Check how popular your Jetpack VideoPress videos are, with Jetpack Stats.

Jetpack Stats, including video stats, are only available in the Jetpack plugin. If you’re using the individual VideoPress plugin and want stats for your videos, please install the Jetpack plugin as well.

Video views have their own section within the Jetpack Stats page under Stats → Traffic tab in your WP Admin.

Scroll down on the page to find the video stats section.

VideoPress stats display

Jetpack VideoPress videos on your site are listed by title, along with how many views a particular video has received.

  1. To view detailed stats for a video, click on the video’s title.
  2. Click on View details to view more detailed stats for all videos.
  • Impressions: The number of times a video was loaded on the page.
  • Hours watched: The total number of hours that the video has been watched by all viewers.
  • Views: The total number of how many times the video was played.

Please note this is the total number of views, even if one person watched a video multiple times. We record a single play while the page is open. If a person reloads the page or revisits the page later and watches it again, then that would count as a separate play.

Retention rate calculation

The Retention Rate is calculated by the percentage of a video’s total duration that is watched on average per view.

rate = ( ( watch_time / views ) / duration ) * 100

WooCommerce Analytics

Help us make WooCommerce better for everyone by sharing additional usage tracking for users of WooCommerce and Jetpack.

To better understand how site visitors use WooCommerce — and so that we can efficiently and effectively improve the product — we track some activity on your site’s product pages, and cart and checkout.

By understanding how our customers are using WooCommerce, we can build more helpful features, write better documentation, and make WooCommerce a more useful platform.

What we’ll track

We track user behavior events and interactions including:

  • When products are viewed.
  • When a product is added to or removed from the cart.
  • When the checkout is viewed and an order processed.

These events are in addition to Jetpack analytics and use the same system. Analytics events will be attached directly to your WordPress.com account and are handled via a first-party system that Automattic owns and maintains.

Privacy Information

The WooCommerce Analytics module is activated by default when both the Jetpack and WooCommerce plugins are activated. You can deactivate it by going to Jetpack → Settings and scrolling down to the footer and selecting Modules. On the Modules page, you can toggle the WooCommerce Analytics module on and off. Detailed instructions for using the Modules page are available.

Activity Tracked
Site Owners / Users

We track several events around the settings of this feature: whether users can checkout with / without an account, whether an account can be created at checkout and if customers can checkout without an account, which payment / checkout options are available to be used.

Site Visitors

We track when site visitors start a session in the shop, view products, add and remove products from the cart, view checkout, and complete orders. We also track device used, whether users can check out with / without an account, whether an account can be created, and which payment / checkout options are available to be used.

Events include metadata such as a session ID for identifying the session (randomly generated), the user landing page URL, the current page URL; product name, product ID, quantity, and product category; unique user ID (randomly generated identifier); WooCommerce version; blocks used on cart & checkout pages.

Get more views and traffic with Jetpack

Read some tips to attract more visitors and get more traffic to your site by using Jetpack features.

Make your new posts visible across social networks

Promote your posts across your social media accounts with Jetpack Social’s sharing feature. The auto-sharing feature will automatically tell your contacts and friends across the social networks you choose about your newly published post.

Promote your content with Blaze

Advertise a post or page of your site on some of the millions of WordPress.com and Tumblr sites with Blaze. You can start promoting content from a $5 investment per day. Learn more about how Blaze works here.

Make your content visible to search engines

The internet is full of theories on how to raise your post’s visibility in search rankings: none will contest that original, high-quality content with a few well-chosen tags is the best way to get started. On top of this, you can get your website indexed by search engines directly from your Jetpack settings option:

  1. From your WP Admin, head to Settings → Reading.
  2. Look at the Discourage search engines from indexing this site checkbox next to the Search engine visibility settings: it must not be checked.

Additionally, you can go the extra mile and optimize your website for search engines. The Jetpack SEO feature can help with that.

Have readers subscribe to your site

Encourage friends and family to read your blog. Use the Jetpack Newsletter feature to encourage them to sign up for updates. Your readers can also opt in and subscribe if you place a subscription block in your website and blog session or use special options such as the subscription pop-up window or the subscription block at the end of each post.

Promote your site beyond Jetpack

Link to other blogs

Blogging is all about engaging with others and interacting in online discussions. When you link to a blog post, the blogger will likely find your blog through their stats or a pingback and come to see what you had to say. They may even subscribe to your site and leave a comment, as we suggested you do above!

Blog regularly

Blogs that have more frequent and regular posting schedules tend to develop an audience quicker. If you need inspiration, check out The Daily Post’s resources, like these how-tos on editorial calendars or serial posts. Our daily writing prompts can offer a jump-start, too.

Pay for traffic to your site

There are web applications you can pay to help boost traffic to your site. We encourage you to research these independently to decide if they might be right for you.

Relax! It takes time

Even if you do all the above, you won’t develop a huge following overnight. Building a sizable audience of engaged and loyal readers takes time. Many of the bloggers you admire have likely been at it for years. Stick with it, and don’t get discouraged by a slow start.

Plugin Management

Update plugins automatically and in one place with Jetpack’s plugin management tool.

Keep your site secure by making sure your plugins are always up-to-date. With Jetpack’s plugin management tool, you can update plugins manually, set automatic updates, and activate or deactivate plugins on a per-site basis or in bulk.

Plugin management is available by default on all Jetpack-connected sites.

Jetpack will also alert you on the site’s Activity Log page when there are plugins that need to be updated.

Back up your site

With automatic or manual plugin updates, it’s important to make sure your site is backed up. Sometimes an update to a plugin can break how your site works; having a backup on hand makes life much easier if you need to roll back a plugin update to restore functionality to your website.

Manage plugins on one site

To manage plugins on a single Jetpack-connected site, follow these steps:

Through Cloud.jetpack.com

  1. Access your site’s Cloud.jetpack.com Manage Plugins interface at: https://cloud.jetpack.com/plugins/manage/yourjetpack.blog Replace yourjetpack.blog with your site’s URL.
  2. In the Update Available column you will see a button if an update is needed. For example, “Update to version 1.3.5”. Click on the button to update the plugin.

Other plugin management options on this page are available by clicking the three-dot menu under the Actions column:

  • Toggle plugins to be activate or deactivate them.
  • Turn auto-updates on or off.
  • Manage the plugin.

Through WP Admin

  1. Login to WP Admin for your site.
  2. Click on Plugins in the sidebar menu.
  3. Select your plugin view to view All or Active plugins.
  4. Under the Automatic Updates column, click on Enable auto-updates.

For more settings, click the name of the plugin to view more details.

Manage plugins on multiple sites

To mass update plugins across all sites that are connected to Jetpack, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Plugins Management section of Cloud.jetpack.com.
  2. Click on “Update to version ___” ( ___ will be the actual version to update to) next to each plugin installed across your sites.

Other plugin management options on this page are available by clicking the three-dot menu under the Actions column:

  • Turn auto-updates on or off
  • Toggle plugins to be active or inactive across all sites
  • Update all plugins for all sites at once
  • Update an individual plugin on all sites at once
  • Click the three-dot menu next to a plugin to remove it from all sites, or manage it across those sites

For more settings, click the name of the plugin to view more details.

Troubleshoot plugin updates

If you are having any trouble updating or managing plugins on your Jetpack-connected sites, please check the following configurations:

  • Site is not under version control
  • You must be able to install plugins and update them without entering a FTP username and password
  • The following constants need to be set to false or not defined: DISALLOW_FILE_MODS and AUTOMATIC_UPDATER_DISABLED.
  • Any plugin that intentionally disables autoupdates must not be active.

Still need help?

Please contact support. We’re happy to advise.

Migrate subscribers to a new site

Migrate your email subscribers and WordPress.com subscribers between two Jetpack-connected sites.

Check the requirements

Before migrating the subscribers, please make sure that these conditions are met:

  • The source and destination sites must be:
    • a WordPress.org website connected to WordPress.com via Jetpack or
    • hosted on WordPress.com
  • The WordPress.com account must be the owner of the WordPress.com site (or the WordPress.com connection of the WordPress.org site.) Non-owner administrator accounts cannot move subscribers.

The subscription migration tool does not migrate “likes”. Your like count will reset to zero on the new site.

Migrate your Subscribers

To move your subscribers from one Jetpack site to another, follow these steps:

  1. Log into your WordPress.com user account and go to your Cloud.jetpack.com dashboard.
  2. Select the site you want to migrate your subscribers to.
  3. Click Subscribers.
  4. At the top of the screen, click the three dots next to the Add subscribers.
  5. In the pop-up, select Migrate subscribers from another WordPress.com site.
  6. In the modal that displays, select the site you want to migrate subscribers from and click Migrate subscribers.
  7. On the next screen, click Confirm subscriber move.

You will see a notice at the top of the screen to confirm that your follower migration has been queued. You will receive an email to let you know that the subscriber transfer has been initiated. You will receive a second email when the migration is completed.

Depending on the number of subscribers, it may take up to a day for the follower counts in your stats in your Dashboard to accurately reflect the transfer.

After migration, email subscribers will continue to receive new post notifications via email. However, WordPress.com followers will only see new posts in the Reader. To receive email updates, they’ll need to manually subscribe to your new site.

Consider publishing a post on your old site to let readers know you’ve moved, and invite them to follow your new site.
